Sweet Lemons or Persian Limes
March 11, 2010 • Category: Ingredients
We used to love these sweet lemons; I still remember the excitement when they would first show up and we’d get a few at home! These look like fat lemons, but have absolutely no acidity whatsoever!
We used to eat them as a snack after school.
I thought they would only be available in Lebanon or Syria and lo and behold, “my” Palestinian grocer is carrying them! I believe they are produced in California and Arizona.
What does a lemon taste like if it is not acidic? It tastes very sweet and delicate! Try it and let me know! aka Sweet Limes or Persian Limes.

I had a bunch of it just yesterday. Here in California it’s called sweet limes. Love it!
We had a big tree in my back yard in Brazil. There we call it “Lima da Pérsia” as delicious as the ones from here. yummmm

I’ve had sweet limes in Mexico and loved them. But unfortunately, I’ve never seen them in our stores here in the midwest. I love Lime Soup which is a good chicken soup with vegetables and a squeesh of sweet lime. DELICIOUS!

“Sweet Lemons.” Isn’t that an oxymoron?
Are they like Meyer lemons? I’ll have to look up these golden sweeties.
Jo, once as a kid, I was dared by my so-called friends 🙂 to suck on a whole, sour lemon. I, never one to turn down a dare, puckered right up, even before the lemon hit my lips.
Discovering (to my surprise) that I actually liked the acidity of lemons I’ve been a fan ever since.

These are new for me too! I would love to try them as I find citrus so refreshing but a bit too tart for me. I like mixing the fruit with lemonade 🙂

Sweet lemons are available in Australia (although rare because probably they are not well known). I’ve tried two types. The Persians in Australia sells them.
One type is very lemon looking with a pointy end, but taste more grapefuity despite being sweet and the rind is not easy to peel.
The other type comes with thin or thick skins, the distinctive feature is that the tree bark is dark brown or purplish with no thorns. The lemon flesh is sweet and refreshing with a tangy taste. I love this second type of sweet lemons ever after.
